Fall Books for Kids…My Favorites!

As a preschool teacher, I have read hundreds of children’s books. HUNDREDS.

Some are classics that stand the test of time, and other’s are character based books that I had to drag myself through (but it’s about the kids, right?).
I’ve compiled a list of my favorite fall books for preschoolers that my classes have always loved.

Being a bookworm, I love children’s books. I still read a lot of children’s literature. My favorite season just happens to be fall, so these fall books for kids make my heart happy. Although the title says “fall books for preschoolers”, I’ve read MANY of these to toddlers through grade 3. Don’t be fooled, all kids love a good story.

If you’re teaching preschoolers, or using my fall preschool lesson plans, these books are perfect for circle time. I always had a stack in our circle time area for our students. To this day, I have a book basket in our homeschool room for my kids. These days, they are filled with Moby Dick, The Hobbit, and The Three Musketeers. I miss the age of sweet picture books.

My Favorite Fall Books for Preschoolers (Circle Time Favorites)

The Little Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything

This book was a staple all through the month of October for my classes. If you don’t celebrate Halloween, you might want to skip this one. If you do, this is a not-so-scary book about a woman and a pumpkin.

Description: Once upon a time, there was a little old lady who was not afraid of anything! But one autumn night, while walking in the woods, the little old lady heard . . . clomp, clomp, shake, shake, clap, clap.

And the little old lady who was not afraid of anything had the scare of her life! With bouncy refrains and classic art, this timeless Halloween story is perfect for reading aloud.

A classic and fun Halloween read-aloud story that neither you nor the kids in your life will be able to resist, whether curled up at home or in a classroom or library setting.

The Berenstain Bear’s Harvest Festival

Maybe it’s because I grew up in the 80’s, but the Berenstain Bear books have always been a favorite of mine.

Description: Autumn is a beautiful time of year, and the folks of Bear Country are looking forward to everything the season brings. So when the Chapel in the Woods holds its first ever Harvest Festival, people gather at Farmer Ben’s for a wonderful time of family, friends, fun, and praising God for his gifts.

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves

This book always made the giggles start! There’s an “old lady” book just like this for many holidays and seasons. Highly recommend these hilarious books!

Description: Our favorite old lady is back and swallowing autumn items! That wild old lady is back swallowing fall-themed items. What can you make from leaves, clothes, a pumpkin, and rope? That's right, a scarecrow! Perfect for back-to-school time.

Apples and Pumpkins

Description: A young girl spends a glorious fall day picking apples and searching for the perfect pumpkin in this refreshed classic.
"When red and yellow leaves are on the trees," a little girl goes with her parents to a farm where they pick apples and choose "the best pumpkin of them all." Back home, she helps to carve a grinning jack-o'-lantern face on the big orange pumpkin, which guards their doorstep on halloween night while her mother hands out shiny red apples and she and her father go trick-or-treating with the neighborhood ghosts and goblins.
Bold, autumn-colored paintings and a simple but lively story capture a little girl's joy and satisfaction as she shares in the excitement of the fall season.

Big Pumpkin

If you don’t celebrate Halloween, skip this one.

Description: A little bat uses brains over brawn in this not-so-scary Halloween picture book.

The witch has grown the biggest pumpkin ever, and now she wants to make herself a pumpkin pie for Halloween. But the pumpkin is so big she can't get it off the vine.

The Biggest Pumpkin Ever

This book is a series about two little mice and their family. They have ones for Christmas, too! My son always loved the “biggest ever” series.

Description: Desmond and Clayton must work together to win the Biggest Pumpkin competition, in this popular bestselling picture book. Once there were two mice who fell in love with the same pumpkin....Desmond the field mouse wants to carve the biggest jack-o'-lantern in the neighborhood with his pumpkin. Clayton the house mouse wants to win the Biggest Pumpkin contest with his. But when they discover that their choice pumpkins are actually the same one, Desmond and Clayton decide to work together to grow the biggest pumpkin ever!

Turkey Trouble

Another funny book that is sure to make your preschoolers giggle!

Description: Turkey is in trouble. Bad trouble. The kind of trouble where it's almost Thanksgiving . . . and you're the main
course. But Turkey has an idea--what if he doesn't look like a turkey? What if he looks like another animal instead?
After many hilarious attempts, Turkey comes up with the perfect disguise to make this Thanksgiving the best ever!

Until next time,

Soli Deo Gloria,

Mandy
