Our Favorite Homeschool Art Curriculum

Homeschool art was a subject that I had a good handle on during the young years. When my kids were little, art was fun, cute, and easy. Pinterest was my art project playground during the elementary years.

Then the kids grew, and all of a sudden we weren’t making cute toilet paper roll crafts anymore. They wanted to learn drawing, painting, and sculpting.

I can’t draw to save my life (hello, stick figures!). I knew I needed something that I could outsource, preferably with tutorials.

Then, I found Yellow Spot Sun’s homeschool art curriculum by Marrissa Raimonde.

Marrissa’s art lessons for homeschoolers are perfect for us. She offers classes with videos, so it’s like my kids are right there in her classroom learning from her. Marrissa has been an art teacher for 18 years, and now offers classes for homeschooling families like ours.

Her art classes are also from a Christian worldview (which is our top priority in homeschool curriculum).

Marrissa was so kind to my readers and subscribers and has offered a coupon code for any of her homeschool art classes!

Homeschool Art Made Easy!

What I love about this homeschool art is that the classes are taught for me! Marrissa has pre-recorded art lessons where she teaches the art lesson. She shows my kids how to draw, paint, and use materials I’ve never used before.

She even does the art project, too, so the kids are doing art with her. How neat is that?

I love this homeschool art curriculum.

I find that most homeschool art classes are really not art classes…it’s usually some sort of workbook and written instructions.

This gives your students so much more, for roughly the same price.

They are learning new art skills that they will use for the rest of their lives.

My kids learned how to use watercolor pencils last week, and two years ago, we learned how to use acrylic paint like an impressionist.

Art Units, Galore!

Yellow Spot Sun also offers all kinds of homeschool art units! I like to pair our art for the year with our history curriculum.

For example, my 10th grader is in American History this year. I paired his American History curriculum with Yellow Spot Sun’s Trailblazing Transit art unit. I’m lining up each art lesson with what we’re currently studying in history.

We learned about Native Americans last week, and YSS had a lesson on Native American canoes. Naturally, we did that art project last week.

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

My 6th grader is using Generations “Taking Europe for Jesus”, and learning Christian history in Europe.

For his art, we are using Yellow Spot: Sun’s ‘Color Theory with the Impressionists for Families’ Unit. We’ve used this one once before 3 years ago, and really enjoyed it.

I used it with both kids at the same time, even though they are 4 grades apart. You can do that with all of the units for YSS art! If you have a large family, this will save you money as you can use it for multiple children across many different grades.

My 6th grader and I are revisiting the Color Theory with the Impressionists for Families and sharpening those skills while learning some European history and artists, too. It pairs well with his history and serves as an expansion.

More about Yellow Spot: Sun

Yellow Spot: Sun offers over 60 different art courses, with new lessons being added monthly.

Many of the lessons are pre-recorded so you can work at your own pace at a time that is convenient for your family. We personally enjoy the recorded classes, because we can see how the materials are used and what it realistically looks like.

There are several “do-it-yourself” art courses that come with a downloadable step-by-step downloadable PDFs.

Live art lessons are offered once a month, usually on the last Wednesday of each month.

Marissa also has a YouTube channel where she posts more videos.

You Can’t Ask for a Better Homeschool Art Program!

I admit that I have not only sat in on these lessons, but I also love to participate. I’ve learned new skills and even found a love for painting through her lessons.

These lessons are made for all ages, so my older kids (middle and high school) are learning new skills throughout the year that I could personally never teach them.

The best part is that I see them using these new skills in other areas. I’ve seen them using their newly learned art skills in other subjects when they have projects, and I’ve watched them use their newly learned skills on the weekends in a sketchbook.

Isn’t that the goal? To teach our kids skills they will carry with them forever. It’s a great feeling as a mother!

The best part is that Yellow Spot Sun is VERY affordable, and it can be used for a very wide range of ages and grades. You’ll spend less on this homeschool art curriculum than you would for many homeschool art curriculum “workbooks”, and they don’t even have video lessons!

It’s all download and go! I print our PDFs out using our Epson Eco Tank printer (very ink friendly!), and then add the pages to a 3-ring binder. Marrissa has a list of supplies needed for each unit, and all the supplies are easy to find in stores or on Amazon.

Check out Marissa’s wonderful homeschool art lessons today, and make sure you use your coupon (code artclass10) to save on any of her classes for your homeschool students.

Until next time,

Soli Deo Gloria,

Mandy
