Best Homeschool Language Arts Curriculum

My favorite subject, in the past as a student and now as a homeschool mom, is language arts. There are endless homeschool language arts curriculum choices, and we’ve tried many of them. Believe me when I say that not all language arts curriculum is the same. There are widely different styles, brands, and methods to teaching this subject.

What is included in language arts curriculum?

Language arts typically covers a few subjects; spelling, grammar, composition, vocabulary, phonics, and reading.

You’ll find most homeschool curriculum companies offer some sort of language arts curriculum for your homeschooler. Some combine everything into one book, and others have separate books for each subject (spelling, grammar, etc).

IEW VS Abeka Language Arts Curriculum (review)

Abeka Language Arts

Abeka is definitely a favorite curriculum brand of mine. My kids enjoy the traditional school teaching style that Abeka offers.

You’ll find that Abeka language arts is a solid curriculum.

Abeka focuses heavily on grammar in their teaching style. You’ll have a separate book for grammar and writing, reading, and spelling/vocabulary/poetry for most grades.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that Abeka does not teach HOW to write, but provides many prompts. This isn’t a problem for most students who already write well or are creative. For some kids, like my children, it wasn’t enough. They needed to know how to write.

Is IEW Hard to Teach?

If you fear teaching language arts, you can rest assured that IEW is not hard to teach. It was made for homeschooling families.

IEW, or The Institute for Essentials in Writing, focuses on teaching your children language arts through writing, grammar, spelling, and reading. IEW homeschool focuses more on writing, where Abeka focuses more on grammar. See the above video for more information.

IEW has wonderful teacher books that make teaching IEW homeschool classes easy and fun!

IEW also teaches your child HOW to write. It took my two boys who were not strong writers and turned them into confident writers in just 2 school years. The difference we saw in their writing after just one year was night and day.

You can try the same writing IEW Writing classes for free!

Either curriculum, IEW or Abeka, will serve your family well.

I know you’ll love both of these brands of homeschool language arts. We enjoy both and use a hybrid of both companies to teach language arts to our boys in our homeschool.

Until next time,

Soli Deo Gloria,

Mandy
