Middle School Homeschool Curriculum; Reading

My son, Jake, is in 6th grade this year. Well, he’s sort of in 6th grade. For you seasoned homeschool moms who get it…we’re not 100% sure what grade he’s in, but we’re just going to go with 6th. He just turned 12, and he loves, and I mean loves to read.

Last year, when he was 11, he proudly told his dad and I that his goal is to read all the classic books. Yes, all. I’m not sure if he realized how many books that was. I don’t think I even realized how many books that was. Thriftbooks has become a constant companion (hello, teacher discount!).

As you can imagine, language arts as a whole is a big deal for him. Before the 4th grade, he didn’t like language arts at all. Once he learned the art of writing, however, he changed. Suddenly, books were more interesting and stories came alive. So when I curate curriculum to suit his love of language arts, you can imagine that I take great care in this area.

Jake and his stack of books he read from August to December last school year. He was so proud of himself.

Homeschool Middle School; Reading Curriculum

About a month ago, I was contacted by Mindy of Redefining School. She’s a middle school teacher who creates homeschool curriculum, along with live and pre-recorded classes. She offered us a free trial of her reading curriculum.

Of course, I said yes!

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I’m so glad I gave this a try!

At the beginning of the month, Mindy emailed us the lesson plans and the PDFs we needed, along with a schedule.

When I opened up the documents, I saw how easy this was and knew it was impossible to screw up.

There were 2 dates during the month that the kids met with Mindy for a Zoom meeting. Think of it like a live class where the kids get to talk and discuss all they’ve learned during the month. The classes have several different time slots each, so you can choose one that best fits your schedule.

Or, you don’t have to join the zoom meetings at all, but I highly encourage it. My son LOVES talking with his classmates and Mrs. Mindy. It’s a great time to get feedback as a parent, too, on how your child is doing. Plus, I think this totally counts as “socialization” too.

Since it’s the end of October right now, Mindy is opening up the class for new students in November! Mindy is a member of our homeschool group on Facebook, and wanted to give all of my followers a huge discount just for joining (more than 50% off!).

You can join through my link and get into the class Jake and I are in for just $12!
You’ll have to hurry, though. Enrollment is only for the next week and space is limited. So if you’re interested, grab a spot! We got our spot reserved already.

More about Redefining School

  • In less than one year, your child will be exposed to several literary giants, many different literary time periods, a variety of stories and poetry, and dozens of literary terms all in just a few short lessons a week. They will also learn and practice a variety of writing skills using the author of the month's style as a guide.

  • The lessons are flexible and adaptable to fit your family's needs. Feel free to do as much of the lessons or as little of the lessons as you'd like. You are in charge of the curriculum!

  • Since she introduces new authors and new concepts each month, if you need to miss a week, or even a month, you can hop right back in when your child's ready.

  • Great literature is meant to be discussed. Your child will have several opportunities to discuss literature and share their own writing in live classes.

  • Mrs. Mindy is just a push button away. In our members only area of our website, you can enjoy Video Ask and send a video, audio, or text message straight to her cell phone. This really helps busy mamas who may be working with other children in their home.

  • This program encourages independence and technology skills both of which are critical to your child's development during the middle school years.

  • This program fosters a safe environment in which kids can learn with and from each other and are taught from a Christian perspective.

  • Enrollment is open only two times a year. So if you want to get in, you need to do it now on the November Try it Out or just enroll directly for second semester. Doors will close in mid December and won't open again until March. Mindy can't accept late enrollments, so get in while you can.

Sign up on this page for the $12 deal! But, put “Mandy” in that box so Mindy knows where you’re coming from for your discount. You’ll get an amazing deal on your first month!

We would love to see you in class with us. It would be great to have some of my homeschool momma friends with Jake and I in our class.

If you have questions, you can contact Mindy at redefiningschool@gmail.com anytime! She’s also on Instagram @redefiningschool and Mindy is also in our Facebook group.

Hope to see you there!

Until next time,

Soli Deo Gloria,

Mandy
