Teaching the Classics - Homeschool Literature Curriculum
What is this?
Teaching the Classics is a seminar for homeschooling parents that teaches you how to take any classic book and turn it into a curriculum for you child. So in short, any book can now be a curriculum for your child!
This is. the only literature curriculum or training you’ll need for the rest of your homeschooling days.
Benefits of Teaching the Classics
You can use. it for all ages.
You’ll get a great variety of classic literature throughout your homeschooling years.
Your children will learn how to read for understanding.
You can use this for literature for all grades, just by making a few tweaks.
There are book lists and extras you can use to help you along the way.
This pairs well with the rest of IEW’s language arts courses (structure & style, Fix it Grammar, Poetry, etc.).
You can choose books your children are interested in.
….I could go on and on.
What do you get?
When you purchase Teaching. the Classics, you’ll get a teacher’s book and. a set of 8 DVDs. I watched the DVDs over the course of 2 weeks, and I learned more than I did in my college course on teaching language arts to children.
What’s more, I found myself using the techniques as I read and studied materials after I finished the training. I knew then just how powerful these skills were for myself, and for my children. I can see how this is going to help them through adulthood as they study in college, books for leisure, and best of all, Scripture.

How I’ll Use This Literature Curriculum
I can’t say enough good things about Teaching the Classics as a whole. I’ve been thinking for the last 2 weeks about how I plan on using this literature curriculum and how I want to integrate it into our homeschool day.
First, I plan on taking our literature curriculum slowly. For the first few weeks, I want to focus on each skill that they need to learn. There’s several key concepts that children need to learn before moving to more complex, grade-appropriate passages or books. Things like plot, setting, characters, and so on. I want to spend at least 1-3 lessons on each of these concepts to make sure both of my children understand it thoroughly.
Next, we’re going to start with children’s literature. This is what is suggested by the author, Mr. Andrews. By starting with children’s stories, you’re giving your children a better advantage. They are shorter, less complex stories that are easier to understand. These are perfect for teaching the concepts they need to learn in the first few weeks. I’m gathering up materials for this throughout the summer.
Last, I plan on making a short list of books that each child would like to read this coming year. We may not get to all of them, but I think that having them help make the readings lists will help with comprehension. Any time kids get to have a hand in their education usually makes for a happier, more eager-to-learn child. It’s especially true for my kids.
I can’t wait to dive into these books with my kids. This literature curriculum and training course for homeschool parents was just what I needed to motivate me for the next school year.
This will replace all the readers I buy every single year with a huge reading curriculum. Now, we can all read the same book, at the same time, and discuss it together. As we go through each book, they’ll become more and more aware of the concepts, and I can see how this will change their way of thinking when they read. It’s already changed the way I read and understand my books.
I also didn’t read many classic books as a student, so this is a great opportunity for me to start a new adventure into classic literature. I have one son, going into 6th grade, who loves (dare I say, is obsessed with) classic books. He’s made it a goal to read ALL the classics before he graduates. He’s off to a great start. He’s devoured everything from Treasure Island to Lord of the Rings this school year. I think he’s rad around 35 classics just this school year, and he’s not slowing down. Thriftbooks has been very helpful for me, as you can imagine!
I’m really excited to bring this review and video to you, as I know it will be so helpful for many of you.
Please give it a try this summer, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. You’ll enrich not just your children’s lives, but your own, too.
