Must Haves for your Homeschool Room (or Space)

Not everyone has a homeschool room, I totally get that. We didn’t have a dedicated homeschool room until this last year. We did a lot of schooling at the dining room table. However, we still used most of the items on this list (minus the desks). This post is for everyone, not just those who don’t have a dedicated space.

Homeschool Desk Setup

First up, our desks. I’ve had 2 kinds of desks in our homeschool room. the first was a small desk with an open space or compartment. Much like the desks we had in public school. It had an adjustable chair that came with it. These seemed like a great space saver for small spaces, but I had an issue with them. My boys were getting older, and taller. They were just outgrowing these small desks, even with an adjustable chair. Also, there wasn’t enough workspace. It was getting hard to keep books and paper and pencils on this small desk.

So we upgraded! Click the image to see it in my store.

These 47” homeschool desks have been a lifesaver. I have 2 of these 47” desks in my homeschool room. This is on the “must haves for your homeschool room“ list for sure! They provide plenty of workspace and room to grow. These desks even work for my husband and I to use with a laptop. We paired these desks with a comfy office chair for our kids. Perfection!

My Homeschool Printer

A laser printer, though pricey, is worth its weight in gold. If you like to save money on printable PDF curriculums, your printer will pay for itself very quickly. Just this week, I printed out a 60 page curriculum in PDF form in a matter of 2 minutes. My preference is HP when it comes to printers. I was burning through ink on the old printers too quickly when I wanted to print out larger documents for school. It was costing me a small fortune! The ink for laster printers is so much more economical. I have only bought ink ONCE in the last 18 months!

Laminator

A laminator is a teacher’s best friend. I’ve had this Scotch laminator for over 5 years now and it’s still going! It’s a BARGAIN of a price on Amazon, too. However, I’ll give you a tip on laminating sheets to save you extra money. Purchase the Amazon laminating sheets (also at the link, just click the image below). They work well in this laminator and you’ll get so much more for your money. You do not need to buy the Scotch brand laminating sheets. You’ll only get a few in a package. In 5 years, I’ve bought just 1 box of laminating sheets from Amazon!

Laptops for Homeschoolers

I’ve noticed that the older my kids get, the more they need the laptop for school. I had been searching for the best laptop for homeschool students, but wasn’t finding what I wanted. Then one day, my husband surprised me with a new Mac laptop to work and edit my Youtube videos on. Isn’t he awesome? So my old laptop became my kids’ homeschool laptop. It’s been working beautifully and we really like this one for school. It’s a work-horse. I plan on purchasing a second one this coming school year.

Binding Machine

Last but certainly not least is my binding machine. I’ve been using this one for years to put small books together, curriculum packs, unit studies, and more! I even bind up artwork my kids did for a year and file it away. There’s so many uses for this machine. It works much like a large hold-punch.
