Even the Taliban Belongs to Christ

This week has been a difficult one for military families, veterans, Afghan citizens, and most of us watching the news (and many more around the world).

How do we talk to our children about these issues when they arise?

I face this dilemma ever year as September 11th approaches. When my children were young, we tried to keep things very simple when we explained the images they saw on TV each year as the anniversary came up. This year, it will be 20 years since the Towers fell. It doesn't seem possible. I still remember that day as if it were yesterday, and I know many of you do as well. We're not just dealing with the anniversary of 9/11, we also now have the situation in Afghanistan unfolding.

My children are older now, one is a teen and one a pre-teen. We can have real discussions about these events where we couldn't so much in years past. I was just a few years older than my 9th grader when the towers fell. My husband enlisted in the Marine Corps after 9/11. He just retired last year from the USMC.

You can say it profoundly had an impact on our lives.

Now, as Afghanistan is in turmoil, we have to decide if we're going to talk about it with our children. If so, how? What is too much? What isn't enough? What will they understand?

Mom, I want to speak to your heart today.

My husband, a 2 time Iraq war veteran, wrote a post this week about Afghanistan.

Even the Taliban Belongs to Christ

by Daniel Maltz

My heart was so heavy until I read this article my husband, Danny, wrote. It's short, but it gives a beautiful perspective on the situation in Afghanistan. It really shifted my focus to Christ, where my focus should always be.

I wanted to send it to you as well, to encourage you as you see all the images and videos this week on the news.

Be encouraged, friend. Christ is in control.

If you know a veteran or active duty military member, I encourage you to check on them this week. Feel free to send this this article. It's meant to encourage us all through this time.

I pray this blesses you and helps you to better talk to your children about these difficult event.
